I’ve been nominated for not one, but two ( XD ) awards by the awesome ladies at Dust off Your MacHalo. You should go check them out! They post some thoughtful and entertaining book reviews and hilarious “Freaky Friday” posts that have me looking forward to the end of the week. Seriously, it makes my Friday! Although a word of warning: it’s not for the faint of heart. 😉
Thank you guys! You are so much fun to follow, and I always look forward to your posts. (And you love my tagline! I’m all breathless from the flattery. :D)
So, there will be two posts about the two different awards, but I’m going to do the second one first, because that’s just how I roll. (Backwards, apparently. Which would explain a lot about why I don’t roller skate or ride bicycles anymore—that chipmunk had it coming though.)
(Tiny print note: no chipmunks were harmed in the making of this blog.)
Today’s post is for the Mystery Blogger Award, a wonderful community-building idea created by Okoto Enigma, and there are rules (noooooo!!!!!), but I have resisted my natural inclination to break them, and to help me do that, I’m posting them here:
- Put the award logo on your blog.
- List the rules
- Thank whoever nominated you and link to their blog
- Mention the creator of the award and provide a link as well.
- Tell your readers three things about yourself.
- Nominate roughly 10-20 people for this award
- Notify your nominees by commenting on their blogs.
- Ask your nominees five questions.
- Share a link to your best/favorite post that you’ve written
Okay, I guess I’m on number five of the rules. Three things about myself. Hmmm.
Well, I love parentheses way too much (I hate spelling the word, though…see! I can’t stop doing it!!!!). In fact, it’s starting to become an obsession really. My parenthesis keys are almost worn away. I can’t help it! Parenthetical commentary is how I think! (Don’t judge me! 😉 ) I blame my brain for always interjecting muttered side comments during a thought.
Okay, for the second thing about myself…
I love playing video games! I’m sure I’ve mentioned that before. Bethesda probably tops my list for developing my favorite current games, but I’ve been playing for a long time, so way back when Planescape: Torment and Revenant were out (two of my all-time favorites). Before that, I played almost nothing at all because most of the games were action platformers, and I am not that hand-eye coordinated. Plus, those kinds of games bored me, though I did try to beat Spyro (because dragon). Notice I said “try.” Oh yeah, there was a rage-quit involved.
Third thing about myself…
I’m working on getting my black belt in karate. I’m currently a green belt, and I’m loving it! I’ve always been a huge fan of martial arts. I swore to myself that someday I would take the initiative and start learning it myself. When my daughter expressed an interest, we signed her up, and every time I took her to the dojo, I told myself that I should sign up too. Yet, every time, I just sat and watched them do their thing.
Then she asked me to join the class with her. For a week or two I put her off, afraid to get out there in front of everyone as one of the oldest students and look like a fool tripping over my own feet. Finally, she stopped asking, but I could see the disappointment in her eyes whenever we dropped her off. I realized then that I had to force myself out of my comfort zone and do what I’ve always wanted to do without worrying about what others might think.
And now I’m doing very well at it, not just providing an example for my daughter, but also proving to myself what I’m capable of.
Okay, that was three things about me, but now I need to answer the questions my nominators (sounds ominous) asked. I can’t wait!
If you could pick any character to die a long and horrible death, who would it be and how would you kill him/her?
Ah ha! See, this is why I play video games! Especially the ones that let you kill off non-playable characters (NPCs). In Skyrim, there are quite a few you just want to put an arrow or twenty into, but the one I’d like to kill over and over again (and do 😉 ) is the high-elf, Ondolemar. If you don’t know the game, then let me just say this guy is a class-A jerky pants. All I can say is kill it! Kill it with fire!
It’s zombie apocalypse time! The horde is coming for you and you have just enough time to grab one thing: your favorite book, a treasured memento, or a bag of your favorite candy/snacks. What do you choose and why?
Oh my gosh, oh my gosh, oh my gosh! I love this question!!! I’ve been planning my bug-out bag forever for the zombie apocalypse…okay, just kidding…or am I? You’ll never know until the apocalypse hits. 😉
So what would be in my hypothetical bug out bag? Survival gear. Like Mike and Ike’s. Because everyone needs those sweet, sweet candies when the apocalypse shuts down the factories and zombie hordes crowd the super market making grocery shopping as difficult as a payday Friday.
I mean, I guess I could grab some thumb drives filled with family photos and my manuscripts, but then I might not have time to grab the box of Mike and Ike’s. Decisions, decisions. See, this is why you always pack in advance!
Who is your favorite book boyfriend (or girlfriend)?
Wow, that’s a tough one! So many to choose from! I have to say that I’d choose one of my own characters simply because I wrote them to appeal to my tastes, making them my favorites. I have a hard time singling one out, though.
I was going to say that this would be easier if you asked who your favorite fictional boyfriend/girlfriend was because then I could use video game and movie characters as well, but I still wouldn’t be able to single anyone out, since I love so many. Sigh. I’m going to have to pass on a definitive answer here. I just can’t choose!
What happened in the most cringe worthy sex scene you’ve ever read?
Lots of apple-green sticky fluids. Pools of it, rivers of it gushing everywhere. (I read alien romance, so….) Yeah, not a bad book, but I’ll never rinse that image of Nickelodeon-like slime out of my head. I pity the poor maid or janitor, or whoever had to clean that mess up!
If you could go back in time and give your younger self any advice, what would it be?
Don’t procrastinate. Don’t wait until you feel certain you can do something. Just try it and keep trying until you get it right.
I wasted too much time waiting for the right moment instead of making it. I’d tell my past self not to hold off on living until she felt ready, because you never feel ready. There’s always the excuse of “I’ll feel more confident tomorrow. I’ll take that martial arts class tomorrow. I’ll write that manuscript tomorrow. I’ll post that blog tomorrow.” Follow your dreams today. If you fail, there’s always tomorrow.
Those questions were fun, and surprisingly more difficult to answer than I expected, but here’s another doozy for me to choose. I’m supposed to put a link to my favorite/best post that I’ve written. Ah! I can’t choose! So difficult!
Okay, okay, I won’t cop out this time.
I love complex, multi-dimensional villains! I love gritty, dark anti-heroes. So this post highlighted my struggle to write these characters as dark as I want them to be while still manage to appeal to my audience. I don’t know if it’s my favorite post of all time, but I think it’s definitely up there.
Okay, I’m all out of order on the rules, but see, I did say that I don’t follow rules very well. Now, here’s my nominees. I want to preface this list by saying these aren’t all of the really great blogs I follow, but I had to put some kind of limit. So my nominees are:
Ah, the questions! Yes, how could I forget the five questions? Mwahahahaha…ahem. Okay, here they are:
- What is the wildest thing you’ve ever posted on the Internet for all the world to see?
- If you could be anything at all (horse, cat, dragon, triple mocha latte), what would you be and why?
- If you could have any type of superpower, what would it be and why? (I know everyone asks this question, but that’s because it’s a good question. These are important things people need to know. 😉 )
- If alien spaceships appeared in the sky one day, what would be your reaction to them?
- What is the most difficult challenge you’ve overcome in your life and how did you get through it?
I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. Thank you again for the nomination, Dust off Your MacHalo. You guys rock!
I’ve still got the other nomination post to write, but it may not be next week. I have quite a few posts planned ahead of time (for once, I’m actually sort of organized!)
